The second annual Constitution Bee was hosted on September 27th to challenge HSSD Langston 4th grade students with questions taken directly from the official Naturalization Test, which is required of individuals seeking to become U.S. Citizens. The idea for the Constitution Bee began when Langston ESOL Facilitator Ms. Telles was teaching English to another staff member who was working through the citizenship process. As educators heard them working through questions, it was evident that our own students could benefit from studying the same content.

Questions from the test are focused around U.S. civics and history, leadership, government structure and legal processes, and geography. Example questions include:  How many justices are on the Supreme Court? (9) What is the United States Capitol? (Washington D.C.) The U.S. House of Representatives has how many voting members? (435) How many Amendments does the U.S. Constitution have? (27).

The Constitution Bee is organized just like a spelling bee. 4th grade students line up and are called to a stage. Those that answer correctly get to participate in another round of questions. Those that answer incorrectly or don’t know the answer are eliminated, and sit to cheer on other classmates. Teachers were given Constitution Bee questions more than one month ago, and many have practiced with students since that time. This exercise provides incentives and fun competition, and hopefully builds permanent knowledge for students about our nation.

2nd annual Langston Constitution Bee winners are: First Place - Azarah Lewis; Second Place - Kyle Young; Third Place - Alfredo Perez. The winning question asked of Azarah Lewis related to U.S. history. Principal Ellars asked her “What did Martin Luther King, Jr. do?” Azarah answered “He fought for our freedom.” All three students are from Mrs. Kim Cox’s class.

Congrats to all Langston 4th graders and thank you to all teachers and staff for making the event a memorable learning opportunity!
